Yippie: Milestone reached. TYPO3 documentation as reStructuredText!

Yippie - milestone reached!

I've done it! I've converted much of our TYPO3 documentation from OpenOffice monolithic format to reST (reStructuredText) format. You can think of me as drinking Champagne with you right in this moment.

The URLs are temporary in the moment:

http://srv123.typo3.org/~mbless/DOCROOT_HTDOCS/TYPO3v4/doc_core_api/html/

And the layout is temporary - but quite nice already:

There is only a rudimentary navigation at the moment - it simply hasn't been done yet. But you should get a feeling of what is about to come. Shortly YOU'LL BE ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE! Isn't that great? So you better get ready!

Alright, so now the time for document "hopping" has come - click them and directly beam yourself from one to the other. The homepage of each doc project points to the others:

reStructuredText is what makes that possible. It's just normal typewriting plus a few little tricks. Sounds antique? Sure! It's just as antique as emailing is. Remember? Emails are actually typewriter text plus some little tricks as well ...  Click thos "Show Source" links to find out:

reStructuredText

reStructuredText tries to be a normal human friendly typewriter text as much as possible:

Cgfghhff

You can do this - so join the crew!

If you want to dive into the tricky parts of reStructuredText you find the documentation in the web. But it may be more easy to go here. This is the collection of doc files that accompanies the Docutils' reST implementation compiled as a Sphinx project:

Great times to come!

You want to help? That's good! Join the TYPO3-project-documentation mailinglist!

See you soon! And: ... dream a little dream ...

Not to forget. You're using TYPO3 and need to do a survey?

Always good to know ...

TYPO3, direct_mail: Poor man's cron job

Task, problem:
Let's suppose you're using TYPO3 with direct_mail to send a lot of newsletters every now and then. And a true cronjob isn't available. What can you do? Well, direct_mail is cute enough to offer a manual way:

  1. select module:
    Unknownname
  2. select newsletter:
    0unknownname
  3. manually invoke sender:
    1unknownname

Each click on "Invoke Mailer Engine" will send a bunch of mails. The exact number depends on what you've configured. I still only send 50 at a time. This small number will hardly disturb any mail server. On the other hand you may have to sit there for hours waiting, clicking, waiting, clicking, ... A repetitive task - isn't that what computers are built for?

Vielen Dank nochmals!
